"Readers of Steven Saylor or John Maddox Roberts, accustomed to paying $25 for their latest in hardcover, can download The Bow of Heaven, as good as anything either one ever wrote, for $3 in about ten seconds. Enthusiastically recommended." - Historical Novel Society

The Other Alexander Book I of The Bow of Heaven eBook Andrew Levkoff

I love all things to do with Ancient Rome, having read both fiction and nonfiction on the subject. So I was eager to pick up Levkoff's "The Bow of Heaven." And I wasn't disappointed. Levkoff has a gift for characterization, bringing the people of this ancient world to life. Some readers find the abundance of similar names in novels of Ancient Rome limiting. Levkoff keeps the focus of the story on a small cast of characters who quickly become familiar.

Alexander is a Greek philosophy student who becomes caught up in the war between Rome and Athens. Captured, he is given as a gift to Crassus, for his role in the conquest. Alexander first fights against the indignities of being a slave. But his sharp mind and caring nature win out and he eventually comes to love his master and the others in his household. I was glad that Crassus was portrayed as a many-layered individual and not the cliched slave-owner. I found myself easily caught up with these characters.

I was intrigued by Alexander's point of view. Seeing the Roman republic through a Greek's perspective is a unique way to shine light on both its strengths and weaknesses. Levkoff does a great job of including bits of Roman life--like bathing or dining practices-- in an easy way that adds texture without feeling pedantic.

Set in the years leading up to Caesar's reign, Levkoff weaves romance, history and intrigue for a satisfying read. As the story progressed, I could feel the tension mounting and wasn't disappointed with the finale. Looking forward to the second installment.

The Other Alexander Book I of The Bow of Heaven eBook Andrew Levkoff Reviews

Being a fan of ancient history, as it always seems to be a relevant insight into current events, This book was purchased as it seemed to be the kind of 'historical fiction' that would add to this body of knowledge. It was not disappointing in that regard. There were many details provided as an insight into the day-do-day life of the period and place; the historical events, namely the civil conflicts occurring which led up to the end of the Roman republic, and finally the insights into some the leading characters, participating on the stage of that drama, which were painted with vivid color and realism. The main character of the story, a young Greek with good prospects of taking a place in the world of academia of that part of the world who was snatched from this life and sold into slavery, was startlingly real, with a very caustic wit, but whose personality altered over time, again quite believably owing to circumstances of living within the most powerful, gigantic and brutal empire of the era, albeit within a household of privilege. This first of three books left me eager for the subsequent volumes of this series.
If you enjoy reading historical fiction, then this book is for you! Andrew Levkoff can hold his own with the likes of Steven Saylor and Robert Harris when writing about ancient Rome. This novel is told from the viewpoint of Alexandros, a young Greek who finds himself a slave in the household of Marcus Crassus, the richest man in Rome at the end of the Republic. This book is the first of the "Bow of Heaven" trilogy, and while it works as a stand-alone novel, I was impatient to find out what happens next. I read the book when it first came out, then re-read it when the remaining two installments were done, because I wanted to be reminded of the nuances. The characters are so well written, that they stayed with me long after I completed the book. I liked reading about the contrast between the social stations of the various characters from slaves and freedmen to clientes and senators, and in particular about the developing relationship between Alexandros and his master, Crassus. This book is well-plotted and lays the groundwork for the coming two novels, while being written with elegant style.

Since I read this book on my , I liked that I could click on the underlined words that are found in the comprehensive glossary, and then be brought right back to the text where I had left off. I love it when I can learn a something while enjoying a good book! For those readers who don't care to toggle back and forth, the context is sufficient to explain most of the terminology so that it's not necessary to do this it's just something that nerds like me enjoy.
